I have been on Ortho-tricyclen for 8 months now. I have always been very regular and started my periods when on second or third placebo pill. I usually take them at 10 p.m. However, last month, during my second week, I missed my pill on Thursday, and took it on Friday at 5 p.m (19 hours late). I took another pill on Saturday 8 a.m. and one more at 9 p.m. I started bleeding slightly on Saturday morning. Initially I though it was a breakthrough bleeding due to the missed pill, but the flow increased and turned into a proper period that lasted for 11 days. I continued taking my pills at the regular time and have not missed any since. While I was still bleeding, I had unprotected sex (without the backup method) 7 days after I missed my pills (the following Friday evening). The bleeding stopped on the following Monday, the second day of my placebo pills, or one day before I would normally start my period. I am confused as I am not sure if I just had my period early or it really was only a breakthrough bleeding. If it was a breakthrough bleeding that stopped right before I would usually menstruate, does it mean that I am missing my period this month and that I might be pregnant? I have not had any symptoms other than the backache. Also, given that I am on my inactive pills week now and I don’t have my period , should I be using a backup method until I start my next pack? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
