I went to my regular family doctor, who in 1983 must not of known a whole lot about womens health. He lanced it on the outside. Which in turn gave me years of reoccurances and pain. I finally found a gyn. that was incredible. He was also a teacher. What he told me is that there are two Bartholin glands, one on each side. These glands are present to aid in the lubrication during sexual activity. Sometimes these glands can become infected (and not just because of an STD), and if not treated correctly, like mine wasn't, give you years of pain. He told me that my family doctor never should of lanced or cut me open on the outside, but to go up through the inside, the way the gland normally drains. There were always different reasons for my reoccurances. Examples were constipation (pushing to hard), bike riding, sex, right before my period. It really didn't matter. He tried numerous ways to try and fix it for me, and after about the sixth surgery, I finally had some relief. What he had to end up doing was (after consulting with a plastic surgeon, and a proctologist) cut me open, and leave it open for two days (I stayed in the hospital for 6 days) and then we went back down to surgery and he closed it. As with all cysts, if not every little bit is taken out, they can always reoccur. He scraped and took alot of scar tissue, from the previous surgeries out. There were also fistulas that had formed (these are little tracks or tunnels) for a way for the cyst to drain. It has been 11 years since my last surgery. I am 39 now, and until 3 days ago had never had any problems since. I do think that I am now getting it back. My gyn that I had back then is no longer around, and I will again need to find one as kind, and considerate as he. Thank God there is a gyn in my hometown that was one of his students. If anyone wants to know anything about this, feel free to contact me.
