emergency contraception for weaning ?From: Lida (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 10 Jun 2002 09:26:36 -0500 (CDT)
I am the nursing mom of an almost 2yo. I have been informed I must deploy for a short time with the military. I must wean my daughter. in addition to the "don't offer, but don't refuse" approach to help the weaning be more child-led, I was thinking of reducing my milk supply to discourage her nursing (if there's nothing there, it wouldn't be worth it for her.) I know that bcp with estrogen will decrease the milk supply. Would there be any side effects on my daughter if I take a high dose of them? Any side effects on me? I am not currently using any bcp's. I have a long history of abnormal pap smears (usually progresses back to CIN III after each procedure) that began when I first took bcp's (but I corrolate that more to becoming sexaully active at the time, rather than the bcp's.) I recently had another conization and have a follow-up pap smear in July. Are bcp's known to affect dysplasia? I could also take antihistamines to decrease my milk supply but I don't know how much my daughter would get through my milk.
