Anemia and infertilityFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 8 Jun 2002 22:13:41 -0500 (CDT)
I had been diagnosed with what looked like textbook iron deficient anemia (hgb 9, hct 30, all rbc profiles low)UNTIL my iron stores came back as normal. My bone marrow response was normal and there was no indication that rbc were being destroyed. My son has the EXACT same clinical and lab results as me (hct, hgb, normal iron profiles, etc.) I have an Scilian father so it seems to me that I may have Thallasemia minor. The RE I was seeing refused to treat me until I got my anemia under control, but if I do have thal. I won't be able to get it under control. My questions: Who do I need to see for further testing re: my anemia? A hemotologist? What is the difference in presentation between thallasemia and anemia of chronic disease? Are my hopes of having another baby with the help of an RE gone forever if I do have Thallesimia or if they Know that my anemia can't be helped will they treat me? Before I have another child should I have genetic counseling to see if my husband is a carrier as well (if I do have thallasemia)?
