Bulimia - detrimental to health?

I am told that one of the reasons Bulimia is detrimental to health is insufficiency of nutrients due to self-induced vomiting. How is this possible when one is unlikely to vomit "everything" that is consumed? In other words, if a person has eaten a total of 5,000 calories of food, it is impossible that the person will vomit all the 5,000 calories of food. This, of course, means that the body still retains some nutrients from food. If this is true, then how can self-induced vomiting be dangerous?
