I have had to take medication just prior to surgery with a sip of water and no adverse effects. I would be careful to avoid more than that, though for the reasons that have been rather forcefully outlined by others. I don't smoke but I would imagine the stress of impending surgery would make your cravings worse. Hang in there! I have found that I feel very tired and depressed after a surgery but this doesn't last long.Best of luck,
