Hi Sue,

When you smoke you put nicotine into your body. Nicotine is a drug that has an affect on your blood vessels. They want to avoid complications with anesthesia and make sure that the docs can monitor you properly.

With water, you need to have an empty stomach before surgery. This is to help you from aspirating fluids from your stomach into your lungs which can cause pneumonia, even death.

One side-effect I have had from anesthesia is nausea and vomiting after. They can give you some medication to prevent that. You will feel groggy for a while.
