One bad bleed--anemia that won't go away?From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 9 May 2002 22:33:53 -0500 (CDT)
Last July, I had my second pp menses where I bled for 5 weeks and hemmorraged for 1 1/2 weeks. During that time my hct dropped from 41 to 29. Since July, I have taken iron intermittantly (I don't tolerate the gi side effects very well)and eat a normal diet, but currently my hct is 32 and my hgb is 10. I have had no more bad periods--they have all been fairly light, but I cannot seem to recover. I do have Lupus. I have four questions: How bad is my anemia considering my levels and the duration of it? Do most people recover from anemia eventually without agressive iron therapy? Is there anything else that I can do to treat the anemia? FWIW, my 20 month old son has practically identical hct/hgb numbers to me and they have been low like mine for about the same amount of time, but his iron levels have been specifically tested and they are fine. (He takes iron). Could there be something environmental or genetic making us anemic?
