For Nadia: Tips on health insurance, especially for the self-employedFrom: Alex (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 1 May 2002 10:07:46 -0500 (CDT)
Nadia, In a number of states (Florida is one) a self employed individual as the sole employee can qualify for group health insurance after being in business for 30 days. Health insurance is a really open market, and can vary considerably state to state, and within state. There are cases where premiums in one state can vary as much as 50% for essentially the same coverage. You can shop around yourself, but you are probably better off with an agent who really understands health insurance. (a good idea for choosing an agent is to look for specific professional insurance credentials- such as CLU listed after their name). You should think about what your specific health needs are. For example, if you can afford to pay for routine care yourself, there are plans that cover only surgery and hospitalization only, but this is covered comprehensively. Always check out the insurance company with your state insurance regulator's office. If the insurer tells you they don't need a state license because they are "federally" licensed, run away as fast as possible: they are a fraudulent company.
