are canker sores always from herpes?

I know that canker sores and cold sores in the mouth are symptoms of herpes, but I was just wondering if that is the only cause. I have had canker sores periodically appear since I was very young so I know this is not a STI I have contracted. I have noticed, however, that my fiance gets canker sores much more often than I do (he also had canker sores before I met him) and sometimes I wonder if by kissing him when he has outbreaks if that will cause me to have an outbreak too? Are some people just naturally more affected than others? I guess I just don't understand why his is so much worse than mine.
