To Amanda - part 2From: BJ (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 Apr 2002 12:41:23 -0500 (CDT)
I am curious to see what you OB will say about the cream. Many doctors, even if they realize that natural progesterone is the right way to go, don't believe enough is absorbed through the skin so they don't recommend it. The problem being that blood tests for hormones are inaccurate and don't measure available progesterone. Saliva testing is much better and cream use causes an almost immediate spike in level when tested that way. Creams are over the counter so you pay the whole amount but a 2 ounce tube or jar runs 20-30 dollars and lasts a month or more depending on the dosing schedule. The important thing is that the cream have an adequate standardized quantity of progesterone in it, 450-500 mg per ounce. I learned long ago that paying for something that works is a lot better than having insurance cover something that does not work! I feel the same about medical practitioners. My chiropractor is my number one go-to doctor even though I have to pay for her out of pocket. I use MDs as a tool in my tool box, not the only tool. They are good for tests and checkups and the occasional surgery! You are not on birth control pills or anything like that, are you? BJ
