question about surgical staples

I recently had a bad allergic reaction to a new necklace I was wearing. I had a bad blistering rash and swelling. My doctor said it was a nasty contact dermatitis. I of course stopped wearing the chain and the rash and swelling subsided. My doctor asked me If I ever had a metal reaction before and I said no. I had forgotton an incident a few years ago. I had abdominal surgery and when I went to have the staples removed the nurses remarked that it appeared I had had a reaction to the staples. The area around each staple had a red swollen circular area around it and the staples had sort of sunk in. I had very terrible itching but having no past experience with incisions thought it was normal. My question is I will be needing surgery again and I will mention this issue to my doctor. Is it possible to be allergic to these staples. I hadn't given this any thought unitl I just had this other reaction.

thanks mj
