can anyone explain this to me please?

I have been told that if a person with an active cold sore around his mouth performs oral sex on a woman, the HSV1 virus will be transmitted to the woman, and become genital herpes (HSV2). Is this true? It makes sense that the virus would be transmitted this way, but not that the virus would actually mutate in the transmission from one host to another. Can someone explain? Thank you!
