Re: home pap smearsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSun, 31 Mar 2002 09:38:14 -0600 (CST)
Hi Robin, I agree with you wholeheartedly...the doctors aren't the ones that "blast" people, it's the contributors on this forum that do it. I have to wonder if some women's reluctance about going to a physician has to do more with what they DON'T want to know. Let's say that the home test indicated a possible HPV infection. What then? They'd end up going to the doctor anyway (hopefully) for treatment - if they have any interest in maintaining or monitoring their cervix/reproductive health. I've had a few girlfriends who've had pap smears that revealed HPV. Most of them have to see the doctor 3 times a year. Most of them receive encouraging results each time. And they're healthy. Could a home test give consistent, comprehensive, diagnostic treatment like an MD could? I wouldn't think so. By the way, would you ever consider a medical career? I've found a lot of contributions to the forum very informative, but booksmarts can be marred by social and general ignorance (which I see a lot here). You've got a graceful handle on both. I think the medical field would be lucky to have you!!!
