As you no doubt found in your thorough search of the archives on Pregnancy & Birth on OBGYN.net, it can be used safely in the second trimester as well.

Interesting to note that BV has been associated with preterm deliveries and the reason for treating the BV is to prevent or reduce the rate of preterm deliveries associated with BV.

Studies have shown that, although BV can be treated effectively with Metronidazole, the rate of preterm births associated with BV sometime during a pregnancy, doesn't change. No one knows why, as of now.
