Oral contraceptives have many more beneficial health effects than harmful ones. You don't hear babout the good ones on the news because they don't get anyone worked up and don't increase ratings. Oral contraceptives decrease the incidence of endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer. They also decrease anemia by decreasing menstrual flow. They increase the incidence of thrombotic problems from a bout 1 per 100,000 to 2 per 100,000 women. The decrease in ovarian and endometrial cancers will prevent about 1 in 100 women from dying of those disorders.
It has been proven
>that women don't stop making estrogen as they age, No but it sure decreases by about 90%
but doctors are still
>prescribing estrogen especially for menopausal women. Why is this so? Because the normal biofunction is to die off at age 55 after the reproductive process is over. After reviewing at least 150 studies on HRT, it is my belief that the evidence overwhelmingly shows that HRT adds several years to the life span of those who are take it. Number 1 cause of death of women over 50 is:------------ Heart disease. Number 2 is stroke Number 6 is (ALL CANCERS ADDED TOGETHER INCLUDING BREAST CANCER) HRT decreases death from heart disease and stroke by about 50%. Also evidence now looks like it also decreases incidence of Alzheimers disease. And that is why we Physicians prescribe these horrible medications for women. Sorry but you did push one of my buttons. As a rule, we look at scientific evidence, weigh its importance, explain it to our patients and then try to help them come to a logical appropriate decision as to what they should do. Why are so many women put on HRT?
