Colostomy after rectovaginal fistula repair

I had a repair of my rectovaginal fistula by my gyn. I was not placed on any diet restrictions before or after this surgery. Her comment to me was "This is no big deal". A week after the surgery I still had not had a bowel movement. The next day the repair tore and led to the colostomy. Shouldn't a person be placed on a diet to avoid the distruction of a repair?
