Re: Safe timing to have sex with no protectionFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Jan 2002 17:38:28 -0600 (CST)
Dear FAM fan, I think that the point everyone should take home is that certain methods of birth control are better suited to certain people, independent of the "failure rate". If natural family planning is working out well for you, then that is wonderful. But NFP is not for everyone. You are lucky to have such a normal cycle and enough discipline to use NFP and you are right: in circumstances where a couple accepts the risk that NFP may fail and pregnancy may result, this would be fine. However I think that most of the women in this forum are not in your shoes, i.e. they do not have regular cycles, they are not willing to diligently take temperatures, etc. every day, they are not in monogamous relationships, they are not ready for children or absolutely do not want more children. In those cases NFP wouldn't be the ideal form of birth control. "Reliability" depends very much on the individual. A 1% failure rate for you may mean a 5% failure rate for someone else. So please keep all these things in mind when choosing a method of birth control. And if you really want a statement that NO ONE can argue with, the only absolute 100% effective method of contraception is abstinence. Using any form of birth control assumes that you're willing to take an "acceptable risk"! So no one is trying to say that NFP is a bad method of birth control, only that NFP works well only for a very small percentage of women, of which you are lucky enough to be a part of!
