[Birth Control] Bled halfway through cycle, missed period this month

This week should have been the week of my "regular" period, and I didn't get it. During the first week of my cycle, I experienced heavy discharge. The second week I had spotting, and the second-going-into-third week turned to all-out bleeding, like a light period (cramps and all). Based on a previous experience a few months ago (I bled through most of the month, due to taking the pill irregularly) I anticipated that I would still get my "regular" period this week. I've taken my Mircette faithfully all month long, which is why this mystifies me. A visit to my doctor last week confirmed that there was no infection or any abnormality. She also did a urine-based pregnancy test which came up negative. Now, I'm wondering if the bleeding was a)some quirky side effect from the low-dose birth control, or b)implantation bleeding--in which case, I'm thinking of taking another pregnancy test. I cannot understand why I would NOT get my period this month, based on my body's previous reaction to the Mircette. One other thing (I'm not sure if this plays a role or not)--I have been diagnosed with mononucleosis and have been affected for the past two months. Has this perhaps weakened my immune system enough to also weaken the effects of the contraceptive? Or, is the mono somehow affecting my cycle? Maybe it is unfair of me to post this message when my own doctor is unsure of what happened this month...but I'm hoping that someone can offer a solution or advice. I'm trying to understand what is going on in my body, and failing.
