[Birth Control] Getting back on pill postpartum

I saw my doctor today for my 4+ week postpartum checkup. He prescribed Ortho-Tricyclen for me. I am still bleeding from giving birth almost 5 weeks ago. He told me to go ahead and begin taking my pills this Sunday, even though I am not having a "period", just lochia. He said starting now will get me regulated and I will know when I have my period. Is this OK? I'd previously taken the pill for 11 years and have never started taking them without a coinciding period. Just wanted to check, because the insert says to wait on my period.
