Hi Mary, Transvaginal sonography is better, easier (no need to fill the bladder) and can see things sooner than pelvic sonography via the abdominal route. A gestational sac can be see at 4w-4w4d after the LMP (last menstrual period), yolk sac by 5w-5w4d and fetus at 6w-6w4d with heartbeat noted 6w3d (rarely earlier) and occasionally not seen til 7w.
