Length of transitional stage

Hi again, How long can perimenopause last? Are there different stages,e.g early stage? If so are there varying symptoms?I went back to my doctor who has known me for 15 years and he feels that the reason why I missed three months of my menstrual cycle is due to my highly strung character and obsession with physical activity. My mother did not go through menopause until she was 48-50 so what are the chances of my going through it at 38 with no history of illness or menstrual problems. My doctor has referred to my missed periods as amenorrhea,he beleives that in my case it is not even perimenopause.Am I too young for perimenopause?I cannot understand why the term perimenopause is used if after the age of 35 the body naturaly starts to change then it would be perfectly normal for the menstrual cycle to change somewhat wouldn't it?The body overall is slowing down isn't it?so is fertility, right?Perimenopause is just a term used too lightly I feel change is to be expected as we age why label the change?Don't you think that just because a woman in her 20's-30's has missed some periods it doesn't mean that she is going through menopause?Would perimenopause be used to describe a teenagers lack of menses? If blood tests are so unreliable during the perimenopause then they should not be performed and relied upon in order to try to diagnose menopause should they?
