While awaiting the appointment that Dr. Marchbein suggested, I suggest you note if you have any color changes in the nipple during these episodes of pain, and whether they are more likely to occur in cold weather or during exposure to cold. Many of us notice a kind of Raynaud's phenomenon in the nipple while breastfeeding. I found it much more problematic in the first six months of breastfeeding (December to June), and then no trouble in the next ten months. You might call your lactation consultant or LaLeche League leader to discuss the matter while waiting to see the breast specialist.
