difficulty with penetration

My boyfriend and I have attempted sex on several occasions, although it hasn't really worked. We were both virgins around 29 years old when we started trying. He says it's very tight and even if he inserts a finger, he feels a clamping down on his finger. He has been able to penetrate me a few times but it hurts so then he stops. I don't think he's been able to go in any more than a couple inches, if that much. I've tried being on top and that doesn't seem to work at all. Anything where my legs are at a 90 degree angle to my body doesn't seem to work. Is the vaginal canal supposed to be straight? I don't think mine is. It's frustrating because I don't want it to hurt and my boyfriend thinks it shouldn't be this hard to do. But if we stop as soon as it hurts then I won't ever get stretched out. How many times should it take before I would be stretched out enough for it to work?
