Doing cultures will document what type of bacteria you have. Not always will it be e. coli. Also, there are many problems that can mimic a UTI but that isn't what you may have. Interstitial Cystitis and yeast infections are just a couple of things that can mimic a UTI. Also, when the Dr. is doing the culture, it is best that he get a catheterized specimen. When you do even a clean catch, bacteria from the vagina can get in to the specimen and give a false reading on the culture. I know it is aggravating to have to keep going back, but if the medications they are giving you are not working, then you need to go back until they find something that works.
