[Birth Control] Question: Do I have to have a period on bcp?

I am currently taking Yasmin for contraception. I have heard a lot lately about people who choose not to have a period while on birth control pills by taking the 21 active pills and then immediately starting on another 21 active pills. This would go on for 3-4 cycles, then by not taking active pills for 7 days they would have a period.

My questions are: 1. Is this safe? 2. Does this affect the contraceptive effectiveness of the pill or do you need to use a back-up method of contraception?

Thanks for any feedback!
