Periods twice a month and prozacFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 27 Nov 2001 21:20:54 -0600 (CST)
I'm 29 years old and have two periods a month for a year. I was on Desogen for 4 years with no problem, then was switching to a generic brand and started lightly bleeding between periods at day 11 post-period lasting two days. After three months, I went to the doctor and was switched to ortho-novum for two months (pap smear was normal and pregnancy test negative). For the past four months, I have been on ortho-tricyclin - the bleeding has gotten heavier and lasts day 11-14 post-period and is now accompanied by PMS just before it starts. I have not had any pain and my regular periods are normal. Today the doctor suggested continuing on ortho-tricyclin for two months (to get it into my system) and taking prozac or zoloft to minimize the effects of PMS twice a month (I have no symptoms of depression) followed by switching to monthly birth control shots if continuing the othro-tri doesn't work. The PMS is mild and having seen the side-effects, I declined the prozac. I made an appt with a gyn outside of the student health center next month. My questions - is it better to stop taking the pill or to take it continuously to try to sort this out? Will switching birth control meds yet again really help?
-- Thanks, E.A.
