[Birth Control] Ovarian Cyst SurgeryFrom: Jane (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 16 Nov 2001 14:42:25 -0600 (CST)
I am 29 years old, and I was diagnosed with the ovarian cyst on my left ovary 8 months ago, but it is possible that it was there before. My doctor suggested that we wait and see if it is going to dissolve of its own, and I had several ultrasounds and vaginal ultrasounds. My last one of October 25th showed that the cyst was still there, and slightly increased in size-its size is 9.5-10 cm, and they are not sure what's inside: some sort of debris, perhaps old blood. I finally met with my GYN, and she suggested surgery to remove it, but she was a little vague about the alternatives-she only said that it is not going away. My question is-is the surgery the best way, and how commonly it is suggested as a solution, and are there some alternatives at this point. Also, my GYN said that the recent changes occurring in my menstrual cycle, namely their longer duration, extremely heavy flow, and bleeding in between periods are not necessarily the results of me having a cyst. Also, I didn't feel many symptoms related to my cyst since it was discovered-only occasional sharp pain around my left ovary. But recently, besides changes in my periods, I also more often felt pain in lower abdominal area, and just couple of days ago, I felt excrutiating abdominal pain which was situated very low, right about where my ovaries are, and I never before experienced something like that-I took pain killers, and it stopped after 2 hours, and right after that I had a bloody discharge(it happened 17 days after my period). My GYN said that all those things maybe have nothing to do with the cyst, but she didn't suggest what it could be the cause of it and what I should do, other than to wait after the surgery and see if the problems remain. My question is would you agree with this course of action, considering that I still every day feel a little bit of pain in my lower abdominal area and vaginal area. Thank you very much for your time Jane
