Taking bcps on continual basis: any risks? From: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 15 Nov 2001 13:02:42 -0600 (CST)
During my last visit with my Dr., a 4X5cm endomertrioma (my second one in 4 years) was found. My Dr. initially suggested a hysterectomy but I feel strongly against this, especially since I have little pain associated with my endo. He then said I should start taking birth control pills continually. I've been on Desogen for over a month now and have been doing very well. My question is that my dr. didn't ask any questions about family history and I am wondering if there are any risks taking continuous birth control pills if there is a family history of certain inherited diseases or if the patient has a specific condition. For example, I have very mild mitral valve insuffiency, have five family members with osteoporosis, a possible breast cancer family history (maternal aunt had it in her late 60s) and colon cancer running in my family. The only question my Dr. asked was if I smoked--I quit 2 months ago. Is it o.k. to take bcps with a history such as mine? Also, any advice on how to handle the achy feeling in my extremities due to the pill. Thanks so much!
