Am scheduled for a marsupialization next month for my bartholin cyst. I've had it for a year & sitz baths, antibiotics, and draining cyst cavity with a needle hasn't helped. It's about 3 cm & has never been infected. Never had this before. My gyne says that if I drained it with a Word Catheter for a few days the chance of recurrence is 50-60 % because the opening will close. She says that even if I left the Word Catheter in for 6 weeks, it still wouldn't create a permanent opening. True? She mentioned the following procedure as an alternative to the marsup. A cross shaped incision is made, cavity is drained & edges are sewn to create opening. Says it's a quicker less invasive procedure than the Marsup & is done under local anesthesia. She recommends the Marsup. though in case she has to go in deeper; marsupialization is done under general anesthesia here in Canada. Seen three doctors & none will do it using local anesthesia. Is it because it's covered under our Medicare system here? Anyway, my question is: Do I need the Marsupialization procedure or is the cross shaped incision method sufficient? Many women on this forum have had unsuccessful Marsups cause the opening eventually closed up. My gyne claims that all her marsup. surgeries have been successful. Hmmmmm? Last questions. Is a wedge of vulvar skin & cyst wall removed in the marsup. procedure? How long should the gauze be left in? She wants half removed the next day & the rest within two days of surgery.
