I can think of lots of perfectly valid reasons for being more afraid the closer your delivery date. Just thinking of raising a child in a post 9/11 world gives me shivers!

Dealing effectively with panic attacks usually involves 2 things. Controlling the physical symptoms, and addressing the cause. The first is the easy part! Just knowing it's a panic attack, not something else, is progress. Things like meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, massage, exercise, and biofeedback can reduce the number of attacks. They can also lessen or stop an attack in progress. By training your body to relax you can short circuit attacks because it's impossible to have a relaxation response and a panic attack at the same time!

The second part is harder, but just as important. Shine a light on the monster. SOMETHING is so frightening it's been covered up. Your body is warning "Danger!" but it needs a mind (or better yet 2) for a solution. A good, sympathetic counselor is great for identifying problems and helping you solve them. Could be something really simple. Knowing your options for pain control, having a map to the hospital in your purse, or giving your labor coach a pager. (I have no idea what your monster looks like, but I'll bet you can guess some of mine. They got pretty tiny when I really looked 'em over! :^})
