treatment for pre-cancerous cervical cellsFrom: susanna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 5 Nov 2001 21:56:26 -0600 (CST)
I have recently had a number of abnormal pap-test results, and, four months ago, a colpo that came back negative. However, my follow-up pap showed 'mild pre-cancerous cells' and my obgyn wants to do another colpo in a couple of weeks. She says if the results show only mild pre-cancerous cells she would rather not go on to surgery that would take the top layer of my cervix because the pre-cancerous cells could re-occur and she would not be able to continue just taking layers of the cervix. She would prefer just to keep an eye on the cells and let my body's immune system take care of it. I may also have recently developed rheumatoid arthritis, however (the tests are not conclusive) and am worried about my auto-immune system. I would like to know: Is this a typical response by a doctor? Are there various ways of removing pre-cancerous cells, other than removing the tip of the cervix, ie, lazer or freezing of the cells? I am confused about the difference between 'removing the tip of the cervix' and a cone biopsy, which I understand removes the offending cells. Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. I cannot find the answers to my questions on this or any other site. Many Thanks.
