[Birth Control] Are these side effects or something more?

I have been on birth control pills (Ortho tri-cyclen and then Levlen) for four years. Since I began taking the pill, I've gained 67 pounds, my cholesterol level has increased to 293, and I've developed hypothyroidism and acne.

I know the pill can can alter your cholesterol levels, thyroid levels and alter carbohydrate metabolism causing glucose intolerance.

Are my problems side effects of taking the pill? If so, is there a preparation that will minimize androgenic effects? What kind of laboratory tests would be helpful in determining if these findings were sides effects or a more serious problem?
