Anne, There is no way to differentiate between these two entities other than removal and pathologic analysis. Leiomyosarcomas tend to grow more rapidly, but this is variable. Fortunately, the malignancy potential for fibroids is quite low. Estimates are that approximately one in 200 patients with fibroids will have sarcomatous change associated with their fibroids...
