Joyce, Usually general anesthesia. Usually a small incision in the area of the belly button and at least one other small incision just at the pubic hair line. A small scope is placed into the abdominal cavity through the belly button incision. To make visualization easier, the abdomen is usually filled with some CO2 gas. A variety of things can be accomplished via the scope, including diagnosis, laser, surgical excision, etc. Following the completion of the scope, the gas is allowed to escape through the belly button incision and the incisions are usually closed with some sutures. It is common to have some discomfort at the incision sites and possibly some shoulder discomfort from some residual CO2 within the abdomen. Recovery varies, depending upon the degree of surgery done within the abdomen... Lynn
