clots with period

Is it normal to occasionally get clots the size of quarters and halfdollars with my period? This happens probably every few months, not every single period, and are accompanied by bad cramps. A friend of mine told me that any clots in your period are "NOT normal in anyway!" and that its a sign of a miscarriage. This upset me, because I am 25 and I want to have kids someday and if all these blood clots were miscarriages, then I must have big problems! I thought some women get heavy, clotty periods...and it seems my doctor always kind of shrugged it off when I would tell her about it... I am on Ortho, too... Anyway, do I have anything to worry about?
