Dear Jessica,

Given that you had a history of abnormal bleeding and hormonal imbalance in the first place (you mentioned that's why you went on pills), a search for the cause of your abnormal bleeding would appear to be in order. Do you remember the type of hormonal imbalance with which you were diagnosed five years ago? PCO is one of the most common, and it carries an increased risk of overgrowth of the uterine lining (called endometrial hyperplasia), even in young women, even if they've been on the pill. Please discuss this issue with your doctor to determine if a more intensive workup is right for your individual situation.
