Using foam/spermicide alone has a relatively high rate of failure. Combining it with another method - even one as unreliable as withdrawal - can increase its effectiveness greatly. Combining spermicide and condoms is very effective. All of those can be used without a prescription, while you look into another option. The diaphragm may be a possibility for you. Also, depending on the details of your situation, your gynecological health care provider might agree to insert an IUD, if you wish. If you and your partner are willing to consider periodic abstinence from vaginal sex, natural family planning might be an option. Your gynecological health care provider, local Planned Parenthood or family planning clinic, or local Roman Catholic church should be able to refer you to an instructor. For the nearest Planned Parenthood office, call 800 230 PLAN. Good luck.
