how do you know when you are in labor

I am almost 39 weeks pregnant and have started having contractions about every 20 minutes for several hours and then they just stopped. Then in the middle of the night, they came back again. They may just be braxton hicks because it seems they start in the front of my abdomen not in my back, but they don't let up with a change in position. Does this mean labor is beginning......or could this go on for weeks?

Also, I keep getting a sharp shocking pain.....like the baby is pressing on my cervix. It only hurts for a moment, but badly. What causes this pain?

At my appt last wed, I was 50% effaced and a fingertip dialated. This is my second child. Is there anyway to say it will be days vs weeks??

Thanks, it just seems a lot different then with my first child(I guess that is normal ).

Thank you,
