IV's and hardening of veins

Hello all. Let me see if I can explain this right lol. I was in the hospital for pain management recently and they put an IV in my arm. It wasn't actually hooked up to anything, just there so they could give me pain meds. Less than 24 hours after they put it in I started getting tender in the vein area of where it was at. Not long after that I noticed that my vein was hard. They took it out and placed it in my other arm. I had a big "knot" where the iv was in at (close to my wrist) and my vein was hard all the way up to my elbow. It had a redish brownish color over the vein area. After I got the iv in the other arm it started becoming tender after only about an hour or so, and I noticed the vein there was becoming hard also. This one was in my wrist area and did not get as bad as the other. I just had it taken out yesterday when I was released and today both of my arms hurt soo bad. Also in the second site there is another knot in the muscle area close to my inner elbow area. I asked the nurses about this and they didn't know what was causing it. The said that it could be from the medications that were used, but I have had them all through iv before and never had a problem with it. Any idea what's causing this or if I should get to my dr? Thanks for any help. Take Care and God Bless, AJ
