Ovulation

My periods range anywhere from 24 - 28 days. Because they aren't consistent from month to month, how can I know when I'm ovulating? My husband and I are trying to get pregnant and are afraid we keep missing the crucial days. I've read about charting your temperature, but that seems to work best if you have a regular cycle. I've also heard about changes in cervical mucus around the time of ovualtion. Is there anything else? Help!
