As you would find in the archives, the advantages of the IUD relate to not having to remember a thing. Also, no hormonal side effects with any of the IUDs, even Mirena with progesterone which acts locally on the uterus. The main disadvantage is possible heavier bleeding in some, more cramping in some and a possible discharge from the string. A small increase in ectopic pregnancy above the normal statistics. Up front cost is more than the pill. For the most part, my patients love them. Hope this helps and write back anytime for more information. HSM
