I do not feel like I am more qualified than another care giver based on congenital absence of a penis. I have found, after dealing with many OBGYNs of both sexes that there are good and bad of both.I have met some male doctors that are incredibly insensitive and I have met some who are the most gentle, caring, and non-judgmental individuals I know. I have also met some incredible female OBGYN's that I would recommend to anyone. But some of the worst, unfeeling, judgmental individuals I have ever met have been other female OBGYN's. They can take on an attitude that is worse than a male precisely because they feel like they DO know what you are going through. It's almost as if they are saying "Tough it up sister, I'm a woman too and this just goes with the territory." I also find women to be morejudgmental about personal decisions made during pregnancy and birth (my experience is limited to that particular category). Women tend to take it more personally if you don't make the same decisions that they did/would. Well... maybe thats a sterotype too... I want to make it clear that I don't feel like ALL women are that way... just SOME. One of the things that I like about my OBGYN is that he does NOT know that I am going through and will readily admit it. He is very sensitive to the fact that he cannot know what it is like to be a woman, have a baby, etc. So he tends to take on an attitude that in effect says "Your the one going through this... you tell me what your needs are and I'll do my best to help you out." Maybe its just that his style and personality match well with my own... but I never would have known that if I had ruled out seeing him on the basis of sex.
