[Birth Control] A couple of ?s about the pills I just started last week...

I had a normal vaginal birth July 2000 and had been using diaphram due to breastfeeding. I recently weaned my son because I work full time and was having to wake him to give him the only nursing of the day he'd take, first thing in the morning. It was obviously disturbing his sleep cycle, so I had to give it up (sigh, he was a bit more ready than I was). So, I went ahead and picked up some pills, Orthocept. I used to take these pills some years ago, loved them because they didn't give me mood swings. Now, I am experiencing terrible nausea, so I'm slowly moving my taking time from 1pm to closer to bedtime. I'm doing it in hour increments, should this have any negative actions on the effectiveness? I'm really hoping the bedtime taking will reduce the nausea. Also, I took my first pill the day I started my period (29 Aug). According to the package insert, I should be covered for birth control (even though this is the first month) because I took it the first day of the cycle. I'm a bit concerned about the risks of getting pregnant (I'm in the military and have dream orders to England which I would lose if I got pregnant before January, I'd go w/o sex until then if I could talk my husband into it). When do you doctors/nurses think it would actually be safe to have sex without a backup method? I'm especially concerned because my periods have been so strange. This last cycle was 25 days, the one before was 24 days, the one before was 28. Thank you all so much for the time and effort you put in here, you were a great support during my pregnancy. Missy
