This is a constellation of symptoms that are the result of not having any fluid whatsoever around the baby, and is almost universally lethal. However, there are a number of causes, ranging from renal (kidney) abnormalities, neurologic abnormalities, early rupture of membranes and so on. Your chance of recurrence would depend on the proximate cause. The most notorious cause is renal agenesis (the failure of the kidneys to develop), and recurrence is extremely rare. -- William D.
