how would I confirm a doctor's credentials?

I have a long-standing chronic pain condition stemming from neuromuscular damage sustained in a traumatic childbirth. My own OBGYN has been of little help since he is not conversant with musculoskeletal issues. My physical therapists and pain neurologist are tremendously dedicated but do not have the knowledge or ability to guide the medical process.

I have found the name of an OBGYN on the Internet who supposedly has expertise in myofascial pelvic floor and related issues. He appears to be Board Certified and has a number of published articles and abstracts and sits on several advisory boards (maybe even this one, come to think of it!) Going to see him involves a 3 hour drive and I would like to be sure it is worthwhile.

Is there any way to reliably confirm a doctor's credibility and expertise? Usually it takes a few months to get in to see someone with high stature in a certain area, yet when I called I was offered an appointment within the week. Does this mean anything? I have a complicated condition and want to make sure I am in good hands.

Thank you for your response.
