birth control pills, antibiotics, and missing a periodFrom: Jessica (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 24 Jul 2001 09:05:08 -0500 (CDT)
I understand that antibiotics can cause failure in birth control pills but I do not entirely understand why. I have been on birth control for a year and had no problems. I was on 10 days of antibiotics for a UTI which ended about 4 days ago. My period is due in about 2 weeks. (I started the antibiotics the week of my period). I am planning to continue using another method of birth control until the end of this cycle. However, I need to miss my next period for an important event. I have heard that I can skip the sugar pills and take two paks consecutively in order to miss my period. BUT -- If the antibiotics did in fact cause my birth control pills to fail and I ovulated during this cycle, will I still be more likely to get pregnant if I skip this period? Do I need to have this period to ensure that any failure because of the antibiotics is cleared away? Or does it not work that way?
