Anesthesia required for Pap test. Pap test requirement for pregnancy? From: Sam (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 30 Jun 2001 23:23:23 -0500 (CDT)
Actually, I have combined multiple questions here. I am trying to educate myslef in order to better discuss health matters with my wife. Recently, my wife had great difficulty during a pap test. Although very patient and attentive, the OB/GYN was unable to finish the procedure but quickly offered to have the pap done under general anesthesia. This is the most important question. I would appreciate any input. I realize that the test is vital for cancer screening but the ris of general sounds drastic. Is this common? Have many other women had pap tests done under general anesthesia? Also, is a pap test required for a healthy pregnancy, or is it strictly a vital tool for cancer detection? Last question: Could the fact that she was unable to have the test done mean that her cervix is too small and might this cause a problem with birth? I appreciate any information or links which would help expand my understanding.
