I have operated on a lot of women with unusual tatoos or body piercings, but would never allow nonessential staff to come in the room with a patient uncovered, or, even worse, come in specifically to look at her genital area. At our hospital even the small window is covered when a patient is uncovered. It's not rare that a nurse will observe "that tatoo must have really hurt" or "I'll never understand why someone would get a tatoo on their anus" but that's much different than bringing in the local boyscout troup to check out the wild tatoo. Your doctor was probably uncomfortable asking the OR staff to leave, since it might make him "uncool" in the eyes of the OR staff. However, he's the captain of the ship, and it's his responsibility to protect the patient as much as possible. Therefore, I would suggest that you or your friend talk this over with your doctor, and, if still not satisfied, notify the nurse manager of the OR and the physician chief of staff of the hospital. Best wishes,

DAH
