A pelvic sonogram can be done vaginally or abdominally. A transvaginal sonogram and transabdominal sonogram are very different. You have to take your clothes off for the former, since the probe goes in the vagina, whereas for the latter the probe goes on the abdomen, around the belly button. Generally speaking, vaginal probes are best for looking at the female organs, while abdominal probes are best for kidneys, ureters, gallbladder, pancreas, and liver. We don't require a full bladder for transvaginal sonograms. Finally, a sonogram and an ultrasound are the same thing. Good question. Hope my answer was useful. DAH
